Two research teams led by YU (President CHOI Oe-chool) were finally selected for “2022 Basic Research Lab support project” managed by the Ministry of Information & Communication and National Research Foundation of Korea.

They are “IR Polarized Lighting Material Lab” and “Human Behavior Stem Information based Digital Human Cloning Innovative Supplementary Engineering Lab (HD-DNA Lab).” These two Labs will conduct research with KRW 1,375 million of support by National Research Foundation of Korea until February 2025.

In case of IR Polarized Lighting Material Lab managed by Prof. KIM Yeong-soo of YU Dept of Biochemistry, Prof. YOON Yeong-sang of YU Dept of Biochemistry, Prof. GWAK Jin-seok of YU Dept of Physics, and Prof. of KIM Byeong-seon of YU Dept of Chemistry Education will participate in researches.

Main task of this Lab is to develop organic/inorganic materials for IR polarized lighting and the goal is basic researches on IR polarized lighting materials and to develop commercialization materials. As researches on IR polarized lighting materials are actively conducted recently in the world, the researches conducted by “IR Polarized Lighting Material Lab” are expected to have high academic and industrial values.

Prof. KIM Yeong-soo of YU Dept of Biochemistry, the chief researcher, said, “IR sensing and analyzing technology is lighted. When polarization technology (to emit light in a specific direction) is applied to invisible IR technology, significantly effective and efficient sensing and analysis is possible compared with current application of IR ray. If this materials are applied to LIDAR technology or encryption technology to be installed in self-driving vehicles, safer self-driving is possible, information with improved encryption is available, and personal life protection function is improved indicating possible application in various industrial areas.”

In case of “Human Behavior Stem Information based Digital Human Cloning Innovative Supplementary Engineering Lab (HD-DNA Lab)” managed by Professor CHOI Jeong-soo of YU Dept of Robot Engineering, Prof. LEE Chan of YU Dept of Robot Engineering and Prof. CHOI Don-wan of Dept of Computer Engineering and Prof. JO Yeong-geun of Dept of Electric Engineering of Inha University will participate.

The engineering technology to support the persons who have difficulty in performing daily activities such as aged persons and paralyzed disabled (spinal injury, brain/nerve injury, muscle/nerve disorder, and polio, etc.) has been researched and developed for a long time. However, such technology has been developed in the viewpoint of robots without consideration of human, the utilization level is low. In order to overcome such technical limit of existing supplementary engineering technology, the Lab conducts a research on new concept digital human cloning innovative supplementary engineering technology by extracting and cultivating stem information that configure everyday life of the disabled and by transplanting and raising it in robots.

Prof. CHOI Jeong-soo of YU Dept of Robot Engineering disclosed his research plan saying, “with the start with digital human cloning innovative supplementary engineering technology for straight plane ground walking, we will expand research areas step by step for six representative everyday life environments and universal everyday life environments. The goal is to develop innovative supplementary engineering technology for complete normalization of everyday life of aged persons and paralyzed disabled (spinal injury, brain/nerve injury, muscle/nerve disorder, and polio, etc.) aged persons and paralyzed disabled (spinal injury, brain/nerve injury, muscle/nerve disorder, and polio, etc.) and such technology will play a core pivotal role to lead next generation of supplementary engineering technology.”

Basic Lab Support Project is the project to support small basic research groups for to strengthen capability for national basic researches. This year, 599 teams applied and 103 teams including two Labs led by YU were finally selected.
